The German banking sector has announced some figures on the use of the girocard in the first half of 2022. There were more than three billion payment transactions on more than one million payment terminals. A sharp increase in transaction and turnover figures is therefore once again recorded. In addition, the girocard is the leading electronic payment method at checkouts.

In the first half of 2022, the girocard recorded around 3.17 billion transactions, an increase of around 17.1% compared to the same period last year (2.71 billion). At more than 134 billion euros, sales increased by around 17.9% compared to the first half of 2021 (114 billion euros). In addition, the number of active payment terminals increased by around 11.0% in the first half of 2022 compared to the first six months of 2021.

In total, around three-quarters (74.3%) of all transactions were made contactless. In the first half of 2021, around 64.1% of all girocard transactions were still contactless. This corresponds to an increase of approximately 10 percentage points. The German banking sector continues to be convinced of the future of the girocard.

Since 2017, the number of transactions in the first half of each year has more than doubled, from approximately 1.5 billion transactions in 2017 to more than three billion transactions in 2022. Sales increased by approximately 72.5 % over the same period (first half of 2017). : about 78 billion euros). In particular, the use of the card to pay smaller amounts has increased. The “average revenue” is only 42.36 euros – in 2017 it was 50.66 euros.
