Antonio Conte is confident that in-form Harry Kane is happy at Tottenham and believes the club are on the right track to persuade him to sign a contract extension.
Striker Kane, who has just under two years on his current deal, started the new Premier League season with a bang, scoring four goals in as many games to help top-flight Spurs take 10 points from a possible 12 .
The situation stands in stark contrast to 12 months ago, when the England captain was unstable and started the 2021-22 campaign slowly after a mooted move to Manchester City failed to materialise.
Head coach Conte, who replaced sacked Nuno Espirito Santo in early November, believes Tottenham are on an upward curve and are working hard to meet Kane’s expectations.
“You know very well that you are creating the perfect moment (for a contract extension) with a project,” said the Italian.
“If also the player understands that there is a good process, that everyone is going in the same direction, I think every player wants to see that.
“And I think Harry is certainly happy because he sees this type of situation.
“There is a vision, there is a direction and there is a unity to try to improve the team and also to improve the team to the level of their expectations.
Conte insists he is not aware of the specific details of a potential new deal for Kane or involved in any potential negotiations.
With Wednesday night’s derby at West Ham marking the start of two games a week until the World Cup, the Italian is more focused on content for Kane, 29, and committed on the short term.
“My opinion is just one of a million opinions,” he said.
“We are talking about a world-class striker and a player who is Tottenham’s most representative player at the moment. Of course, I would like him to sign a new contract.
“But right now, for me, it’s very important to see him happy, fully involved in this season, fully involved in this project and in what we’re doing. For me, that’s the most important thing.
“Then it’s a decision that the player and the club have to make.”
