Ryan Giggs is facing a possible new trial after a jury failed to return a verdict in his domestic violence trial.
The former Manchester United winger had been on trial for four weeks but, after more than 20 hours of deliberation, the jury of seven women and four men, having lost one juror to illness, reached no verdict.
Lawyers will now have to consider the public interest of a new trial, but any new trial would not take place for several months.
Giggs, 48, had denied controlling or coercive behavior over a three-year period towards his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, 38.
He also denied ‘losing control’ and headbutting and assaulting Ms Greville’s sister, Emma, by elbowing her in the jaw, during an argument at her home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, November 1, 2020.
The jurors first came out to consider the verdicts late in the afternoon of August 23.
The 12-person jury was later reduced to 11 after one juror fell ill and was released.
Judge Hilary Manley on Tuesday gave the jury majority direction, meaning they did not have to return unanimous verdicts agreed by all 11, but could return verdicts if a 10-to-1 majority agreed.
But the jurors were brought back to court on Wednesday afternoon and asked if they had reached agreement on certain points.
The jury foreman said jurors in court could not reach a verdict on any of the three counts denied by Giggs.
Judge Manley thanked the jurors and dismissed them from duty.
Giggs was released on bail until a citation hearing on September 7.
