Not only has Apple released iOS 16 for download (see our in-depth review here), but the Apple Watch operating system, watchOS 9, has also been released.

watchOS 9 introduces four new watch faces, according to Apple: Moon, which represents the relationship between the Gregorian calendar and the lunar calendar; Game Hour, a dynamic watch face created in collaboration with artist Joi Fulton; Metropolitan, a classic watch face based on a typo that changes style as the digital crown turns; and Astronomy, an original watch face that’s been completely redesigned to show a new star map and current cloud cover.

Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 now offers more information with the introduction of sleep stages. Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can estimate when users are in REM, central, or deep sleep and when they are awake.

The new Medications feature helps users manage and monitor their medications, vitamins, and supplements. They can create a medication list, set schedules and reminders, and view information about their medications in the Health app. Cycle Tracking users can also now receive a notification if their recorded cycle history shows a potential abnormality, such as irregular, infrequent, or prolonged periods and persistent spotting, which may be symptoms of underlying health conditions.
