Amazon Kindle and Kindle Kids: new generation introduced

Amazon today introduces its two new next-generation Kindle and Kindle Kids: both e-book readers now offer a high-resolution 300 ppi screen. Storage capacity is also doubled – to 16GB. Devices are charged via USB-C. Amazon advertises the new models as the “lightest and most compact Kindle” ever. The recommended price of 99.99 euros is quite acceptable.

Other features: up to six weeks of battery life, adjustable front light and dark mode. The new Kindle Kids essentially adds a kid-friendly case and a year of Amazon Kids+. For this, the sale price increases to 109.99 euros. Customers who pre-order or purchase a new Kindle can get 3 months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost, giving them access to millions of eBooks, select eMagazine subscriptions, and thousands of audiobooks

The two-year worry-free warranty is also a bonus of the Kindle Kids, but otherwise the two new models are identical. Delivery will start on October 12, 2022, so you’ll have to be patient until then. Also on board are well-known functions such as X-Ray, which provides details of people or places in books, and an integrated dictionary, with which any word can be looked up. Simplified setup via the Kindle app for iOS and Android allows customers to register their device in fewer steps than before.

The parent dashboard offers control options for the children model, for example to set reading or bedtimes. In addition, parents have the option of giving their children access to a digital store with other books and comics. If a child has requested a title, parents either approve the purchase or download or simply reject it. The built-in vocabulary trainer provides definitions of unfamiliar words and helps expand vocabulary with flashcards. Additionally, the optional “OpenDyslexic” font is available for many books, which some readers with reading and spelling difficulties prefer.

Price and availability

The new Kindle (2022) with 16 GB of storage space is available in black and blue from 99.99 euros. Fabric sleeves are available in black, pink, blue and green. The new Kindle Kids with a capacity of 16 GB is available in black for 109.99 euros. Parents (and their children) can choose from three cover designs: Space Whale, Unicorn Valley or Submarine. Both models can be pre-ordered from today at amazon.de/kindle or amazon.de/kindlekids and will be delivered from October 12.
