Canada’s squad for the 2022 World Cup is set to be named in October, and the selection for September’s friendlies offers a clue as to who might be on the plane.
Canada will face Qatar and Uruguay this month as their preparation for the showpiece event in Qatar continues.
John Herdman’s side booked their place in the tournament by finishing top of the CONCACAF qualifying section.
It will be Canada’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1986 and its second overall. In the only previous edition in which they participated, Canada lost all three games and did not score a goal. Needless to say, they are hoping for a better result in Qatar.
Canada were drawn into Group F alongside Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

How many players is Canada allowed to bring to the 2022 World Cup?
National managers were allowed to bring 26 players to last summer’s European Championship for the first time at a major tournament, as a special measure introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic – while the Last year’s Copa America allowed teams of 28 players.
It has now been announced that 26-man squads will return for the Qatar World Cup, an extension of the usual 23-man squads.
When will Canada’s final squad for the 2022 World Cup be announced?
The 2022 World Cup will take place in November and December. The tournament was moved from its usual June and July slot due to extreme temperatures in Qatar in the middle of the year.
National team managers must name their teams by October 20, 30 days before the opening game between Senegal and the Netherlands. Most countries will choose preliminary teams first before narrowing down their travel groups to 23 (or 26) names in time for the deadline.
Who will be part of Canada’s final squad for the 2022 World Cup?
Alphonso Davies missed the final qualifying round in March through injury, but the Bayern Munich man will be one of the first names on John Herdman’s squad list. He and Lille striker Jonathan David are arguably the two most important players in this squad.
Atiba Hutchinson will be approaching his 40th birthday when action begins in Qatar, but the Canadian captain will be on the plane to Doha as long as he is fit.
Additional experience will be provided by players like Reading’s Junior Hoilett and Milan Borjan, the 34-year-old goalkeeper.
Another player expected to receive a call-up to the tournament is Lucas Cavallini, a forward who plays at his home soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps.
