The 9 euro note was well received by the majority of the German population and was purchased and widely used. However, opinions differ as to whether it can contribute to climate protection. Further investigations are needed. In times of high inflation and rising fuel and energy prices, it is clear that the nationwide ticket could provide at least temporary relief to some people. The federal and state governments are currently discussing a successor. But the negotiations are likely to drag on according to the Tagesschau.

At a special conference of transport ministers, advice will be given on how to proceed. However, there is a dispute over the money. In general, Transport Minister Wissing and the government want to keep the use of public transport at a low threshold. This includes not only the low price, but also a ticket that rises above the fare jungle. The federal government therefore wants to release 1.5 billion euros for such a project. Then, the States should also participate financially. But they sometimes speak of a “poisoned invitation”. Public transport is underfunded anyway and the federal government’s supply is therefore absolutely insufficient. Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff complained that 80% of the population of his federal state lived in rural areas and that with the current expansion of public transport there would be hardly any successor to the 9 euro note.

Other federal states such as Bavaria consider a successor unaffordable with such a small grant from the federal government. However, Berlin was B. rushed in with a 29 euro ticket. However, this only applies to the Berlin AB fare subzone and will only be offered until the end of the year. In general, successors in the price range of 49 to 69 euros per month are in discussion. However, the success there will probably be more limited than with the 9 euro note, which many people “just” took with them and barely used. At the price of 49 or 69 euros, we think about it more carefully.

In general, the federal states insist that they also need money for the expansion of public transport. And that would require at least 1.5 billion euros per year. He needs a widening of the route and tighter timing. In the end, the whole plan might fail because of the money. Environmental groups argue that company car subsidies should continue to be reformed or removed. Either way, the current goal is to be able to send a follow-up ticket into the race by January 1, 2023. We’ll see if we can do that.
