The Document Foundation (TDF) announced the release of LibreOffice on Apple’s Mac App Store to help end users who want to get all of their office software through Apple’s distribution channel.
So far, LibreOffice has been published in the Mac App Store by Collabora. TDF will charge a fee of 8.99 euros, which will be invested in the development of the LibreOffice project. They’re not the first to provide software for free via the normal download route via a website and charge “support fees” in a store – you can find some examples in the world of Windows and macOS.
The release of the software on the Mac App Store is an evolution of the previous situation, intended to reflect the new marketing strategy of the project: the Document Foundation is focusing on the release of the community version, while the companies of the ecosystem are focusing on a long-term support value-added version for enterprises.
The purpose of the distinction, officials say, is to convince companies to support the FOSS project by opting for the LibreOffice version optimized for production use and backed by professional services, not the community version generously supported by volunteers. .
