As early as 2021, Telefónica and Telekom have announced that they want to eliminate gray areas in rural areas through expansion cooperation. Gray areas are areas where one of the two mobile providers allows a connection, but not the other. To ensure that users of both networks can rely on stable access, the providers already allow themselves and their customers access to 200 mobile phone sites.
According to the press release, the live operation of the cooperation has now started. By the end of the year, the two network operators will grant each other access to up to 700 locations. Thanks to this cooperation, there is no need to install a second, separate radio technology or additional antennas on the mobile phone mast. Especially in sparsely populated or heavily trafficked areas, it is not profitable for operators to set up separate infrastructures and operate them with their own network technology. Therefore, the agreement is beneficial for both parties.
On the site, the operators offer all customers 4G access on the 800 megahertz frequency band. The first stations of a comparable cooperation between O2 Telefónica and Vodafone Germany have also recently gone live. Customers of both network operators will benefit from mutual network access in more than 1,100 additional locations. Customers of O2 Telefónica, its partner brands and the national roaming partner will enjoy 4G mobile reception in up to 2,000 additional locations in the coming months through these two partnerships.
