Takeover of Activision-Blizzard: concerns of the British competition authorities

Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard is currently under intense scrutiny in the UK. So there are concerns that the billion-dollar deal could hurt competition. Such concerns had already been announced by Sony. But Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is confident. He assumes the deal will eventually be called off, as Bloomberg reported.

Nadella said it was normal for a takeover of this magnitude to be closely scrutinized. However, he was confident that the deal would eventually come to fruition. But investors appear to be more skeptical: Activision Blizzard’s stock price is currently well below Microsoft’s offer, suggesting that many investors expect the deal to fail. But the primus Microsoft points out that his employer in the games sector is at best ranked 4th or 5th among the most successful companies. Sony is number 1. And the latter would also take over from quite a few other developers. Thus, in terms of competition, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard should not harm, on the contrary, it creates more powerful competition.

Microsoft also sees itself well positioned against rising inflation: it is believed that its software can be a driving force in helping home and business customers use their time better and work more efficiently. So the value of Microsoft’s services is increasing rather than decreasing in these difficult times. Of course, the share price is not immune to fluctuations, but Nadella is confident that the crisis will go well.

Yet Microsoft, like most other big tech companies, has cut hiring and disbanded some teams. Nadella justified this by saying that Microsoft also needed to lead by example and would start “more with less”. The current economic crisis is not just passing the Redmonders by.
