Here’s what it looks like with refunds for failed service.
The news of Google Stadia being discontinued should come as no surprise to most of you. Nevertheless, the question naturally arises for you as to what will happen next if you subscribe to the streaming service. In this article, we summarize for you what you can get a refund for and what the next steps are.
Hardware and game refunds – How to get your money back
Google Stadia will be shut down on January 18, 2023. Until then, you still have access to your library and can still play games until the end. Google warns that there may be issues over the past few months, but expects most games to run normally. Regarding refunds, the company made the following statement in a blog post:
We will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all games and add-on content made through the Stadia Store.
Other detailed questions are answered on an FAQ page.
How does the refund work? This is not known at this time. Google plans to post country-specific updates to the blog soon. We will of course update this article for you as soon as there is new information. At the moment it looks like you don’t have to send in your gear to get the money back.
Google expects most refunds to be processed by the end of the service in January. The money should return to the original payment method.
You no longer have access to your original means of payment? Next, you should search for emails from Google that will give you instructions. This also applies to anyone who paid with a gift card that no longer exists.
Stadia Pro subscription is non-refundable: However, if you already had an active Pro subscription on September 29, you can access the library without being charged until the service is deactivated.

Google Stadia review – does the ‘future of gaming’ really work now?
Purchase of games and pre-orders: The Stadia Store is already closed. From now on, no more games can be purchased. In-game transactions are also no longer possible. Did you pre-order a game? Don’t worry: the pre-order will be automatically canceled and you won’t have to pay for it.
Game progress: You can only take your game progress with you if the titles support cross-play. If this is not the case, it will unfortunately be lost. So if you really want to finish a game, you have to do it before January 18th.
