Google had already shown the design of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro some time ago. It is similar to the previous model, but differs in subtleties. As part of the launch event, the technical data is also made public, which has already circulated more or less completely on the Internet. Basically, the course set last year is followed: the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro are identical in their basic elements, but the Pro model is a little better in some respects.
The heart of both smartphones is the new Google Tensor G2 processor. This is supported by 8GB in the Pixel 7 or 12GB (LPDDR 5) in terms of RAM and 128GB or 256GB (UFS 3.1) of storage space. Also on board: the Titan M2 security chip. Android 13 is already working as an operating system under the hood. Thanks to the interaction of OS and SoC, many functions are possible again, such as voice input via the assistant with automatic emoji suggestions . Google packs both devices in an aluminum case made from 100% recycled materials. The aluminum frame of the Pro model is polished.
Like the previous year, the Pixel 7 is smaller. At 6.3 inches, it’s even smaller than the Pixel 6. The Pixel 7 features an OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and a Full HD+ resolution of 1,080 x 2,400 pixels (416ppi). The maximum brightness is reached here at 1,400 nits, the front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.
Google adds to the Pro model: the panel size is 6.7 inches. A resolution of QHD+ and a refresh rate of 120Hz are used. A premium LTPO OLED panel is also used here. There’s also more in terms of peak brightness with 1,500 nits.
According to the company, the cameras were also punctured. You’re sticking with the dual camera setup on the Pixel 7, the Pro model also has a telephoto lens. With the normal Pixel 7, this is also used for “8x super resolution zoom”. The main sensor of both smartphones with 50 megapixels is again identical. This year, however, the ultra-wide-angle lens is different. With a field of view of 125 instead of 115 degrees, the Pro model also has autofocus, which activates the new macro mode. This is reserved for the Pro model and should take pictures from a maximum distance of three centimeters.
With the additional 48-megapixel telephoto lens, the Pixel 7 Pro also achieves 30x zoom in combination with 5x optical and digital magnification. The front camera has also been retooled. With a field of view of around 93 degrees, but still 11 megapixels.
This year, however, they also want to deliver on the topic of video. With 10-bit HDR, it is now possible to make high contrast video recordings. Google also incorporates a movie mode that blurs the background in a cinematic look. Apart from that, the magic eraser and sharpener are again used to install many software features for Google Photos to improve image and video recordings – even afterwards. According to Google, improvements have also been made in the areas of real sound and night vision. This means that only half the exposure time is needed for night shots, which should help produce sharper images in poor lighting conditions.
And otherwise ? The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro can once again be unlocked with an under-screen fingerprint scanner. In addition, we also offer facial recognition. To unlock with Face Unlock, Google relies on a combination of front-facing camera and machine learning models in the Tensor G2. It’s about accurately recognizing faces and unlocking the device. For security-related activities, such as logging into apps or activating payments, you must always use your finger, PIN, or password to unlock the device.
When charging, it remains (unfortunately) slow as usual: 20 or 23 (Pro) watts. Both wired via USB-C and wireless – but here only with your own Pixel Stand. Qi wireless charging compatibility is given, as is the ability to charge other devices on the back. Additionally, Google only gives the Pro model an ultra-wideband chip. Both models are IP68 certified.
