According to a press release, Amazon is now launching the first fully electric trucks in Germany. The new vehicles would be an important step in Amazon’s journey to become carbon neutral by 2040. By the end of 2022, Amazon plans to put 20 all-electric Volvo trucks into service in Germany. The vehicles are stationed in Dortmund and Düsseldorf and transport battery-powered and emission-free products.
The commissioning of electric trucks serves to electrify the middle mile – the area of the transportation industry in which freight is transported between warehouses. The 20 electric trucks are expected to travel more than one million kilometers per year. The vehicles will be produced by Volvo Trucks and will transport products from Amazon’s locations in Dortmund and Düsseldorf. The electric vehicles can be connected to 360kW fast-charging stations, which fully charge the 40-tonne truck in less than two hours. Amazon has installed ten of these fast charging stations at its German sites.
The all-electric trucks complement Amazon’s fleet of zero-emission delivery vehicles. In Germany, Amazon already has more than 1,200 electric delivery vehicles in operation. Last year, Amazon delivered more than 40 million packages in Germany with zero-emission electric delivery vehicles or cargo bikes. This number is set to increase further.
Amazon aims to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. In 2021, the share was 85%. This applies to all facilities such as offices, stores and logistics buildings, including on-site electric charging stations.
