Manchester United are set to replace longtime goalkeeper David De Gea.
The Spanish keeper has been split in opinion over the past few seasons, with some noting he’s still one of the best shooters, while others have been unconvinced of his ball-playing abilities and control of his area. United sent No.2 goalkeeper Dean Henderson on loan to Nottingham Forest in the summer.
De Gea was at fault for two goals in the infamous 4-0 draw against Brentford – and now it looks like a successor has been identified by the Red Devils.
French release Multimedia stand (opens in a new tab) claims Benfica star Odysseas Vlachodimos is lined up for the Old Trafford outfit. Vlachodimos had an excellent display in goal against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek in the Champions League and has impressed in recent seasons for the Lisbon-based side.
Leicester City also want the 28-year-old, apparently, with concerns over Kasper Schmeichel’s replacement Danny Ward.
Recently, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville admitted De Gea could be coming to the end of his stay in the North West of England, with manager Erik ten Hag favoring a different type of presence between the sticks .
“I think we see less success with this type of football,” the Sky Sports pundit said. said“Other than Leicester [in 2015/16]can you think of a team that hasn’t dominated possession most of the time and won this league in the last 15-20 years?
“Not really now, you don’t see it. You have to be a really proactive team: at the forefront; pushing; doing all the right things.”
“And I suspect that with David de Gea, his career at Manchester United will probably be short-lived under Erik ten Hag because [Ten Hag is] will absolutely be adamant about his philosophy of playing at the back – playing in midfield; playing those risky little passes that we see [Manchester] City and Ederson are doing all the time that we don’t consider risky anymore because they do it so well – it’s something he strives for and wants to achieve.”
Vlachodimos is valued at around £13m per Transfer market (opens in a new tab).
