The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the “6G-TakeOff” research project for the next generation of mobile communications last year. They are hoping for industrial 6G projects and also want to get their foot in the door of 6th generation mobile communications in order to stay competitive. Deutsche Telekom is now in charge of this research project. The project will continue until 2025, when standardization by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is expected to start. The first 6G networks are expected to be launched in 2030.
22 partners from research and industry are part of the consortium, which is committed to a uniform 6G architecture. Ground stations and flying infrastructure platforms as well as satellites are also included. In particular, when it comes to satellite orchestration, there are a number of things that need to be regulated. The goal is to help fill gaps in ground base station coverage. With such an infrastructure, it is also possible to temporarily and locally provide additional network capacity. Artificial intelligence is also part of the network management of the future: to find optimal connections for incoming data flows or to predict disturbances.
