pseudocroup is characterized by sudden fits of coughing. Mostly babies and toddlers up to the age of five develop paroxysmal seizures Cough after an influenza infection. The seizures can be so severe that the child shortness of breath equipment. According to a recent study, taking fish oil and Vitamin D protect children from pseudocroup during pregnancy.
professionals of Professional Association of Gynecologists (BVF) present the results of a Danish study suggesting that children are less likely to suffer from pseudo-croup if the mother took fish oil or high-dose vitamin D during pregnancy. The results of the study have been published on the ERS Congress 2022 the European Respiratory Society carried out.
Pseudocroup comes without warning
Pseudocroup often occurs unexpectedly and without notice. There is no prognostic method or vaccine against the sometimes dangerous coughing fits.
The working group around Doctor Nicklas Breastad of the University of Copenhagen therefore studied whether the intake of high-dose vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil during pregnancy affects the risk of pseudocroup in offspring.
What was reviewed?
736 pregnant women participated in the study. Subjects received either 2.4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day or a placebo with olive oil. Another group took either high-dose vitamin D preparation (2,800 IU/day) or a standard dose of vitamin D (400 IU/day).
Food supplements came from 24th week of pregnancy until the first week after childbirth taken. Thereafter, 695 children were followed medically for more than three years. In these times 97 of the babies developed pseudocroup.
Fish oil reduces the risk of pseudo-croup by a third
While the risk of pseudocroup in children whose mothers received fish oil instead of olive oil during pregnancy was eleven percent lay, the children in the olive oil group had a 17 percent riskcontract pseudocroup. So, taking 2.4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids is with a Reduced risk by around a third bound together.
High doses of vitamin D also reduce the risk
A similar risk reduction was observed in the high dose vitamin D observed. Children whose mothers took high doses of vitamin D also had a Eleven percent risk of pseudocroupwhile children in the standard dose group are at risk of 18 percent exposed.
Vitamin D and fish oil appear to protect against croup
The Danish research group concludes that taking supplements containing vitamin D and/or omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy, or a diet covering these nutrients, is a protective effect of the newborn against pseudocroup seems to have.
As this is an observational study, the mechanisms underlying the association are currently unclear. Further research is needed to identify them.
Medically clarify intake
The professional order of gynecologists also expressly recalls that any pregnant woman Consult a doctor before taking high-dose dietary supplements should. (vb)
