Shell builds charging infrastructure for KFC restaurants in Germany

Shell Deutschland GmbH and the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant chain are cooperating: Shell is building the new charging infrastructure for KFC restaurants in Germany. To this end, Shell Recharge charging stations with a total of 120 DC charging points and an output of up to 300 KW are to be installed in at least 23 KFC restaurants near the highway in the coming years.

According to Shell, these charging stations are supplied with 100% green electricity. Shell and KFC, who already have a long-standing partnership in convenience stores, naturally want to develop synergy: KFC locations need to become more attractive and they want to generate new sales through the store. Although the two companies emphasize that it is above all a question of taking responsibility and advancing the energy transition, neither of the two service providers is of course altruistic.

Shell aims to be a net-zero emissions company by 2050. According to the group, one of the building blocks for this is the development of a wide range of charging options for electric vehicles. To that end, the company already swallowed NewMotion in 2017, at the time Europe’s largest European recharge provider, which has since been renamed Shell Recharge. In 2019, Shell started building Recharge fast chargers at Shell service stations. In 2021, Shell also acquired the Berlin startup ubitricity, which allows charging on lanterns.

Shell also recently acquired SBRS GmbH, a provider of charging infrastructure solutions for commercial electric vehicles. Globally, Shell aims to install more than 500,000 charging stations by 2025 and more than 2,500,000 by 2030. Of course, this is not happening out of enthusiasm for environmental protection and of the climate, but because it must be taken into account that income from refueling combustion engines will gradually decrease. So it’s more about securing your own sales – which is also legit.
