The Last of Us remake surprised many fans as the original wasn’t that old.
The Last of Us Part 1 has been the subject of heated debate. After all, the PS3 original wasn’t that old and there was already a remaster for the PS4. But Sony still released a remake this year. Now, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst gives a reason that seems a bit strange: the game was so ahead of its time that it didn’t even need a remake ten years later.
The Last of Us Part 1: HBO series ‘may not be main reason’ for remake, says Sony
Not only because of the series? Hopefully, a film adaptation of The Last of Us will soon be released as an HBO series. Of course, this fits perfectly with the fact that a PS5 remake of the first part has just been released, which The Last of Us Part 2 follows almost seamlessly.

The Last of Us – The real first trailer for the series is out
So if The Last of Us is similar to The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077, player numbers could skyrocket once the series airs. Sony might well hope so, but it should not the only reason to have been for the remake.
“Or maybe not even the main reason.
Obviously, if you can pull it all together, that’s the Holy Grail, isn’t it?”

Sony wanted “a definitive version”: According to Hermen Hulst, the remake was created in part because the original The Last of Us on PS3 suffered so much from the limited technology requirements. The creative vision was ahead of its time. That’s why they wanted a “definitive version”.
declaration classification
But to classify Hulst’s statement, we can only refer to our test from the time. Even though the remaster and remake look prettier, The Last of Us was also a hit on PS3 with its story and atmosphere, and despite the technology of the time, did a very good job of conveying the emotions on the faces of Joel and Ellie thanks to motion capture recordings. The limitations of the PS3 version are therefore relatively small and should hardly be the reason for a remake.

The Last of Us in the test – touching and brutal
Learn more about The Last of Us:
The Last of Us was released in 2013, the remaster a year later in 2014. The remake then took place in 2022, not even ten years after the first launch. But that can still be easily topped: at the moment, there’s a rumor that Horizon Zero Dawn is set to get a remake or remaster – and that came out just five years ago.
What do you think of these first remakes? What do you think of Sony’s justification?
