Text replacement on Windows, macOS and Linux

An open source software that we don’t want to omit here is Espanso. The software is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. There are a few solutions for different operating systems for those who type a lot and like to be abbreviated. For example, with PhraseExpress on Windows or TextExpander, abbreviations such as “mgf” can be automatically converted to “Best regards” – or the combination @@ can be converted to a written email address. Also worth mentioning is Typinator or Text.

Espanso also hits the mark and is free. Espanso recognizes when users type a keyword and replaces it as they type it. But not only the texts can be replaced, other configurations are also possible. The learning curve is a little steeper than with the software projects mentioned, since configuration and creation of shortcuts are solved via text files. On the other hand, there is excellent documentation, although in English, which explains all the functions well.

I like it very much, maybe I will leave Typinator soon. I do a lot of things on a recurring basis, including creating codes for some colored boxes here on the blog and much more. Basically, rudimentary text replacement is available in macOS and iOS, but it’s definitely not enough.
