In Germany, soundbars that support 3D sound (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro 3D) are growing in popularity. According to studies by gfu market researchers, soundbar sales are generally good. Because even if the number of units sold decreases, sales increase thanks to higher average prices.
It’s obviously similar to the TV segment: fewer devices generally sell, but buyers are turning to higher-end models. Soundbars are on the rise in Germany: for example, the number of units sold more than doubled between 2013 and 2018. In 2019, more than one million soundbars were sold for the first time in Germany. The sales volume in 2019 was more than 300 million euros.
During the months of January to September 2022, more than 600,000 soundbars were sold in Germany. According to gfu, this translates into a sales volume of over 190 million euros. However, the number of units sold decreased by approximately 7%. However, as the average price increased by 9% to 317 euros, revenues still increased by 1%.
Sales of devices compatible with 3D sound increased by 71% during this period to just under 103 million euros. The average price of soundbars compatible with 3D sound was 577 euros (+1.6%). Here you can clearly see that there is a trend towards soundbars with 3D sound. But it should also be noted that there are more and more models in the middle class that support Dolby Atmos and Co. So the range is wider.
It is also essential to say that soundbars use drivers that radiate upwards for 3D sound. The sound must then be reflected by the ceiling. It works differently depending on the room and you have to sit perfectly in the right place to hear the sound from above. Additionally, the implementation of 3D sound only really makes sense if dedicated rear speakers are also involved.
Soundbars are therefore a significant upgrade to TV sound, but of course they are a compromise behind more complex speaker systems with AVRs and real ceiling speakers. Of course, such systems cost more and also require more layers of cables. Admittedly, many people also use soundbars because the subwoofers and rears are usually wireless and installation is much easier.
