E-prescription: the eGK solution is coming mid-2023

We have already reported that the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Westphalia-Lippe (KVWL) felt obliged to suspend the roll-out of e-prescribing. This was preceded by the decision of the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) to reject the use of the electronic health card (eGK) when transferring electronic prescriptions. Gematik has just released a statement about this.

We regret the decision of the Association of Compulsory Health Insurance Physicians of Westphalia-Lippe not to pursue the introduction of e-prescription for the time being. After all, the rollout there since September 2022 has confirmed in practice that e-prescribing works.

Despite the current ruling, e-prescriptions will continue to be dispensed and exchanged and processes will be further developed. Global use throughout Germany more and more practices and pharmacies are using the digital application, therefore the gematik. Since the beginning of October, more than 3,700 medical (dental) practices have issued electronic prescriptions, which have been redeemed at more than 9,200 pharmacies.

From mid-2023, the redemption of the card via an electronic health card will also be accelerated. It should then also be possible to exchange electronic prescriptions in pharmacies with the electronic health card. In order to develop a technical solution necessary for this, gematik is in close contact with the shareholders, the BfDI and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

Shareholders will vote on the next concrete steps for the national introduction of e-prescription at one of the next meetings. The goal remains nationwide introduction in 2023.
