Eco Rating for mobile phones now in 35 countries

EE, NOS and Proximus joined the Eco-Rating labeling program initially launched by Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica (under the O2, Movistar and Vivo brands), Telia Company and Vodafone in May 2021. According to Vodafone, this rating is now available in 35 countries. Rated mobile devices can be compared to each other through the new consumer portal at ecoratingdevices.com. The rating system provides incentives to improve the environmental impact of manufactured mobile phones. This is also reflected in the higher average total score of 74 to 76 from a high of 100 since introduction 18 months ago.

According to Vodafone, the following points are examined:

longevity: Covers the ruggedness, battery life and warranty period of the device and its components.

repairability: Includes, for example, the design of the mobile phone and additional measures that improve the repairability, reuse and expandability of the device, thus extending its useful life. The higher the repairability score, the better the device performs on these aspects.

recyclability: It measures how easily the device can be disassembled into its components and the valuable materials used can be recovered, what information is provided about it and how easily the valuable materials can be recycled.

climate compatibility: evaluates the device’s greenhouse gas emissions over its entire life cycle. The higher the score, the lower the climate impact.

resource conservation: Evaluates the impact of the amount of scarce resources (eg, gold used to manufacture electronic components) installed in the device on resource depletion. The higher the score in this category, the less the device affects the availability of rare raw materials.

Eco Rating certified mobile phones from these 22 participating manufacturers: Bmobile, Bullitt Group (sells CAT and Motorola rugged phones), Crosscall, Doro, Fairphone, Honor, HMD Global (sells Nokia Phones branded phones), Huawei, MobiWire, Motorola/Lenovo, Nothing, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, Orange, Realme, Samsung Electronics, Sony, TCL/Alcatel, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE.
