From the highs of being crowned world champions for the fourth time in 2014, to the lows of being knocked out in the group stage four years later, Germany are rebuilding with a new generation of players under Hansi Flick.
Decorated veterans such as Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller are now complemented by several exciting young prospects, including teenage prodigies Jamal Musiala and Youssoufa Moukoko.
An enterprising Japan, who have qualified for each of the last seven World Cups, advancing to the round of 16 on three occasions, will be confident of giving them a tough test in their opener.
Kick off is at 13:00 GMT. Make sure you know how to watch the 2022 World Cup wherever you are.

Japan will rely heavily on experienced defenders Yuto Nagatomo and Maya Yoshida, who both have over 100 caps, while Kaoru Mitoma and Takumi Minamino will provide much of their attacking threat.

VPN guide
If you’re out of the country for the 2022 World Cup, you won’t be able to watch on your domestic streaming service as usual. The broadcaster knows where you are thanks to your IP address (boo!) and prevents you from watching it. You can, however, use a VPN to circumvent this, without resorting to the illegal streams you found on Reddit.
A virtual private network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s terms and conditions, creates a private connection between your device and the internet, which means the service cannot determine where you are and will allow you to watch. And all information exchanged is fully encrypted, anonymous and safe – and that’s a result.
