Patent attorney who was tired of redrawing diagrams and retyping documents by hand and invented the very first photocopier.

His nearsightedness and arthritis made the task of making copies of reports much more difficult, and he created a new way to reproduce them by a process called electrical photography.

He approached IBM and the Army Signal Corps with his invention, both of whom turned him down. It took eight years to find an investor: the company Haloid, later renamed Xerox.

On September 19, Carlson died of a heart attack.
