EU allows 5G connections on planes

In the future, airlines will be able to deploy 5G technology in their aircraft alongside previous generations of cellular technologies, as the European Commission has updated the Implementing Decision on frequencies for mobile communications on board aircraft in dedicating certain frequencies to 5G technology on board aircraft.

Passengers on board flights in the EU will be able to use their mobile phones with maximum capacity and full functionality, just like with a 5G mobile network on the ground.

The service is provided in the cabin of an equipped aircraft using special networking equipment called a “picocell” to connect users and transfer calls, texts and data – usually via a satellite network – between the aircraft and the cellular network forward on the ground.

Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, said:

5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European businesses. When it comes to the possibilities offered by high-speed, high-capacity connections, the sky is the limit.
