LG Display introduces nearly invisible speakers for vehicles

LG Display has confirmed in a press release that they are working on new sound technology for vehicles. The so-called “Thin Actuator Sound Solution” should be ready for sale in the first half of 2023 and find its way into cars. Extremely light and thin loudspeakers can be produced based on this technology.

If I’m following LG Display’s description correctly, the whole thing works much like piezoelectric speakers – display panels or other materials can be vibrated to produce the sound. LG Displays’ first solution measures just 150 x 90 x 2.5mm and weighs around 40g. According to the manufacturer, speaker solutions would be possible that are only 30% of the weight and 10% of the thickness of conventional speakers.

In addition, it is easier to install these speakers – for example directly in the dashboard or in the headrest. In addition, special speaker cutouts are no longer required, which also offers optical added value. However, the compromises in audio quality are not associated with the technology. They also want to demonstrate their new “Thin Actuator Sound Solution” in January 2023 at CES in Las Vegas.
