The website CyberNews claims that a dataset is currently available for sale on the web that would contain the number of 487 million WhatsApp users. The data set is also expected to contain around 6 million numbers from Germany. The German database with numbers is available for $2,000. The vendor did not say how it obtained the database, but testified that it used “its strategy” to collect the data and ensured that all numbers in the instance belonged to active WhatsApp users. WhatsApp user information could be obtained through large-scale (automated) information gathering, also known as scraping, but this is speculation.
